Nelson Graburn

Although I retired in 2007, my academic life seems as busy as ever, though much of it was shut down by the COVID-19 Pandemic starting March 2020. I have continued teaching undergraduate and graduate seminars on Tourism and Heritage, (now by Zoom) at the Univ. of California, Berkeley, as well as co-advising many students and writing many recommendations! I have also actively chaired the Tourism Studies Working Group (www.tourismstudies.org). Since autumn 2019 I have been engaged as a part time professor, (2019-2022) Master, Project 111 National Award, Department of Tourism Management, Minzu (Peoples) U. of China, Beijing. Unfortunately, after two stints there in October and December 2019, the pandemic has prevented my planned visits to China.

My research has continued along multiple related themes involving tourism, heritage, ethnic identities and media studies in China and Japan. One added field involves research on the wine industry and wine consumption with Prof. Xiangchun Zheng (Peoples National University, Kunming), mainly in north, central and southwest China, with brief forays in Switzerland, Portugal and the Bordeaux region, France. One of our papers was awarded First Prize (English) at the International Conference on The Wine Market and Cultures of Consumption, organized by Hong Kong Poly U., the Univ. of Burgundy and UNESCO, in Hong Kong, in June, 2019. I was very proud that at this interdisciplinary cosmopolitan conference the award went to the research of a young Chinese woman scholar!
