Tom Baum

Project

  • Professor Tom Baum has been advising the Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behavior (SPI-B), which is a subgroup of the UK Government Advisory Committee SAGE which is assessing behavioral and sociological drivers of the Covid-19 epidemic, and how this impacts specific sectors of the economy, in this case the hotel industry, including Managed Quarantine Facilities (Quarantine Hotels). The report (just published), which SPI-B has produced, will enable SAGE to inform policy in a range of Departments of the UK Government and the devolved administrations with respect to behavioral aspects of risk and risk mitigation across a complex and diverse sector. Tom’s input was sought in light of published work on COVID-19 and the hospitality workforce, including in quarantine hotels in Australia.
  • Professor Tom Baum and colleagues have received a grant from the Royal Society of Edinburgh to investigate customer misbehavior and abuse of employees in the Scottish hospitality industry.

Jigang Bao

Project

  • Prof. Jigang Bao is the principal investigator of the Azheke Village project, a tourism-based poverty alleviation plan. He initiated this project and has kept on providing assistant to this village. The Azheke Village project has created employment opportunities for the Hani people in Azheke Village, Yuanna Rice Terrace, a world heritage site, and turned the village into a popular tourist destination. Nowadays, the Azheke Village has become a world-known village with the help of Professor Bao Jigang.   • Prof. Jigang Bao (PI) and Prof. Honggang Xu are collaborating and working on the two key national projects. One is to deepen the integration of cultural elements in tourism education. It is the first comprehensive key national project on the culture- tourism education strategies. The research covers the higher education, vocational education and training. The project is approaching the end.
  • The second project is the water-energy-food-tourism nexus project collaborating with the University of Surrey and the University of Queensland. The project aims to examine complex relations between tourism and resource sectors.

  • Prof. Honggang Xu is the head of the laboratory on sustainable tourism monitoring through intelligent systems. This project was jointly established with the National Cultural and Tourism Ministry. The lab would focus on the research on using big data, mobile sensors to help the UNWTO Monitoring Center for Sustainable Tourism Observatory monitoring activities.
