President's Message

Dear Academy Fellows:

Time has passed quickly since our last conference, and we are now working on the implementation of the six actions (proposed by Academy Fellows during the last day of the 2022 conference) via a number of ad hoc committees. One of the committees, chaired by Pauline Sheldon, will strengthen the Academy through increased engagement of Fellows and improving knowledge and application of the Academy's bylaws by developing a tool to support communication among Fellows. To meet this goal, Pauline has created ACADEMY-NET, an offshoot of TRINET.

Pauline recently informed the Board that the ACADEMY-NET listserv has been set up and is ready to be populated with emails from all Fellows and Fellows emeriti. She asked the Board to make some policy decisions necessary to offer this new service as of 1 January 2023. The Board discussed various options proposed by the committee and decided to automatically upload all Fellows' and Fellows emeriti' emails to the listserv, but to provide the option to quit this service.

Again, the purpose of the ACADEMY-NET listserv is to promote intellectual debate and professional and personal storytelling among all Fellows and Fellows Emeriti. Administrative communications will be conducted over the usual channels; however, if everyone becomes an active user of ACADEMY-NET, it also will be used as an information channel for announcements, etc. In any case, if someone unsubscribes, they will receive important messages by email as before.

ACADEMY-NET is based at the University of Hawaii, USA, and uses a listserv platform. As with TRINET, messages automatically land in the inboxes of all Fellows who have chosen NOT to drop out of the system; it is intended for use by Academy Fellows and Fellows Emeriti only. You are free to use it in any way you see fit to further the mission of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (purpose, activities, administration) or your own tourism research and education efforts. When posting, please provide a brief descriptive title or subject line so that Fellows can easily understand the nature of the post and delete those posts that are not of interest.

ACADEMY-NET will be up and running by 1 January 2023. To post a message, send an email to: academy-net@hawaii.edu.

We have also started looking for the venue for the 2024 Academy Conference. If you are interested in hosting our next conference at your university, please let us know.

As always, I look forward to hearing from you all as we move towards 2023.

I wish you all the best, Karl.

President,
International Academy for the Study of Tourism
