Nelson Graburn

Note

June – After attending the Academy meeting in Leuven, he visited Krakow to work with colleagues Magdalena Banaszkiewicz (see later), Sabina Owsianowska and Anna Duda and went on to Helsinki to work with Xiangchun Zheng, with whom he has published four article (in three languages!) on Wine and Tourism so far this year. Unfortunately, he tested positive for COVID – probably from the farewell dinner in Leuven, as we had been warned – with no symptoms, but could not take his flight home from Paris to California. So he spent a week in Portugal with his daughter Eva – who runs a very successful hiking and cycling tour company – Terracotta Journeys.

September – he returned to Portugal to participate in a workshop, “Wine and the Global Urbe”, to explore the urban dimensions of old, new, and emerging wine production, wine tourism and cultures of consumption, wine branding narratives, wine classification systems, wine trade and wine-related built environments. The workshop was co-organized by Graburn (TSWG), Maria Gravari-Barbas (EIREST) and anthropologist David Picard, at his winery Adega Belem in Lisbon.

He returned to the Berkeley Campus to receive at 2022 UC Berkeley Distinguished Emeritus Award, attended by many colleagues, including the three founders of TSWG: Naomi Leite (SOAS), Stephanie Hom (UC Santa Barbara) and Charlie Carroll (Singapore Institute of Technology).

In November, he will attend the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Seattle. He will participate in a “Late breaking” panel, “Tourism Anthropology: War, Migration and Refugees” co-organized with Magdalena Banaszkiewicz of Krakow. He will also attend to annual meeting of ATIG (Anthropology of Tourism Interest Group) to witness the announcement and presentation of the annual Graburn Award for the best first book about research on tourism.

Please see the TSWG link: www.tourismstudies.org for events and further news.

Rick Perdue

Note
  • HI Academy Fellows, I hope everyone is doing well. I had hoped to attend one last academy meeting and say this in person, but the pandemic got in the way. I’ve retired from academia and am focusing my time and effort on new pursuits – specifically, trying to develop my skills at pickleball, woodturning, and barn quilting. I had hoped to say goodbye and thank you for your friendship, your fellowship, and the support you provided me during my career. I wish both the academy and you individually the best.

Chris Ryan

Note
  • Like many other countries New Zealand is beginning to enjoy a resurgence of tourism, and at long last some of my Chinese doctoral students have finally been able to get back to the country. I was actually able to host our first face-to-face social meeting of all of my current doctoral students earlier this month. I recently attended a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) event in my capacity as an Advisory Board Member of the Hamilton-Waikato Regional Tourism Organisation and spoke about the needs for more guidance on destination management planning at a national level. In another meeting we will again be picking up past visitor monitoring of our research site at Raglan. A further update of the China-New Zealand Tourism Research Unit website was undertaken (https://www.nzchinatourism.com) and one day I might get around to a more dynamic update. Current work includes writing two books and preparing further research outputs relating to the Fuxi Mausoleum in Huaiyang.
