TEFI Conference
An incredibly successful TEFI-11 Conference has just drawn to a close (7-10 June, 2020) at York St John University. Special mention goes to the organising committee Dr Brendan Paddison (Conference Chair), Dr Jenny Hall, and Dr David Kelsey and Rebecca Biggins, supported by the TEFI executive Prof Johan Edelheim (current Chair of TEFI) and Dr Karla Boluk. The team converted the conference from a physical to a virtual one and still managed to keep the warmth and community support a central feature of the conference.
This year the conference explored the role of purpose in tourism, which is relevant more than ever now. As always TEFI conferences produce a range of outcomes including a special issue and this year, the presentations will be made available online. We encourage you to watch Gavin Bate's keynote address here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohTTrvLLBoc
Appointed Co-chair, Science Advisory Group, Binna Burra Lodge, Beechmont, Qld. Representing the social sciences, I co-chair the SAG with the intention of building strong relationships between Binna Burra, researchers and research institutions. For those who do not know, Binna Burra is located within the World Heritage rainforests and has both environmental and cultural significance. The 86 year old heritage listed lodge was lost in the bushfires in September 2019. The ambition of the SAG to contribute to Binna Burra's recovery, operation and future strategy though informed science-based decision-making. Binna Burra welcomes researchers and would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in undertaking research projects.
Policy Guidance
OECD Tourism Trends and Policies 2020. Chapter 2 Preparing tourism business for a digital future. Digitalisation is changing the way people live, work, and travel, and has opened up new opportunities for tourism businesses to compete in global markets. This chapter examines the impact of digitalisation on tourism, with a particular focus on SMEs. It highlights the important role of government in creating the right framework conditions for the digital transformation of tourism business models and the wider tourism ecosystem, and identifies a number of key policy considerations to foster digital technology uptake and use by tourism SMEs.
Teaching at The Hong Kong Kong Polytechnic University has been conducted online for several months - since mid-November 2019 and throughout Semester 2. It has been a busy period supporting the work of colleagues as they convert all materials from face-to-face to online and endeavor to deliver quality teaching to students.

Chris Ryan
Like many colleagues Chris has been kept busy during the period of Covid-19 lockdown in New Zealand. His university, like many others, moved to on-line teaching and hence that meant the preparation of teaching and learning materials. In addition, as a member of the Hamilton-Waikato Regional Tourism Organization's Advisory Board, and while also attending other Zoom based meetings from governmental bodies, much time has been spent considering ways in which regional tourism can be restored while also contributing to discussions as to future directions. One thing that students found interesting was a series of 10 minute videos made by local tourism operators on how Covid-19 was affecting them, and how they were planning to emerge from the period of lock-down. A note here – about 60% of expenditure in New Zealand emanates from domestic tourism, and at the commencement of June, 2020, tourist sites around the country were opening up to pretty close to full occupancies. In the Waikato, domestic tourism accounts for more than 60% of our tourism, and Hobbiton, which expected to only run three tours over that period of the end of May/beginning of June, actually ran about 18 tours as New Zealanders celebrated the opportunity to again travel with the end of level 3 restrictions.
In addition to this, Chris was able to catch up with report writing for the UNWTO INSTO Centre based at Raglan, and despite Covid-19 lockdown, projects relating to waste management and tourism seasonality were being pursued by undertaking more detailed analysis of data collected from July 2016 to April 2020, and by using an on-line survey using the Raglan Facebook page – which has over 3000 followers! These reports are fed back to the local authority, the local RTO, businesses in Raglan and its Chamber of Commerce and Community Board.
A key development in December 2020 was the signing of MOU agreements with Beijing Union University, Beijing International Studies University and Sun Yay-sen University, but travel restrictions have not permitted many actual visits. Nonetheless various projects continue to be worked on. One key development has been the willingness of Beijing Union University to fund joint research – please see www.nzchinatourism.com.

Dave sends his greetings to the Academy and advises that he remains involved in tourism-related research during his retirement, having been recently appointed to a part-time position at the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane) as a Principal Research Fellow. With both trepidation and excitement, he looks forward to learning about and conducting practical team-based research in Big Data meta-analysis contexts, a new challenge for him. Once circumstances allow, he is also eager to revisit Japan and Taiwan where he is enthusiastically pursuing other cool research and mentoring initiatives.
