Jigang Bao

Project

  • Since 2018, Professor Jigang Bao from Sun Yat-sen University has been carrying out a scientific tourism development plan at Azheke Village, located in one of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritages in Yuanyang County, Yunnan Province, China. The Azheke Plan is a pilot project for poverty alleviation through tourism. After four years of operation, this project has received huge success. Jigang Bao’s research team has helped the poor villagers increase their income and benefit them from tourism development. With the help of the university research team, Azheke villagers have set up their own collective company to develop rural tourism based on the cultural landscape in the village. The company’s revenue exceeds 1.5 million Chinese yuan. 70% of the company's profit is distributed to all the households in Azheke as tourism dividends. The total tourism dividends distributed to Azheke households are more than 919,500 Chinese yuan, and the average household tourism dividend reaches 16,440 Chinese yuan. The Azheke Plan becomes one of the most successful stories of the integration of academic research and social and economic development.

Chris Ryan

Note

“Kia ora (Greeting in Māori)

To be honest I am quite jealous when I see that several colleagues produce long lists of publications and activities. I am sorry to say that Waikato University has been significantly adversely affected by the loss of international student revenues and our faculty has endured three restructurings in about 4 years as it downsizes. Research has of course suffered as teaching and marking loads have increased, and currently we have little monies for conferences etc. There are times when I feel New Zealand is truly at the end of the world – a feeling intensified a little by the continuous rainfall and the damage and loss of life due to two cyclones that have hit the country. In addition, we had two fortunately minor earth tremors recently. That alone makes me feel for the victims of the major earthquake in Turkey and Syria and I do ask colleagues to donate something for those victims.”
