David Simmons
Award
Prof. David Simmons has been awarded a civil honour, a Companion of New Zealand Order of Merit (derived from the British CBE), for his lifetime work in tourism and education. The award is granted by the New Zealand Monarch, King Charles III, via the New Zealand Government and follows a nomination by the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association. In notifying the academy of the award, David notes the contributions of other Fellows: Doug Pearce (NZ) who taught David a post-graduate course in the Geography of Recreation and Tourism (1978), Geoff Wall (Ca) primary PhD supervisor, Steven Smith (Ca) PhD committee member, and David Airey (UK) who has assisted David in the establishment of tourism degree programmes in New Zealand.

Establishment of RCdTT - Drive Tourism’s Digital Revolution
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has recently established the Research Centre for Digital Transformation of Tourism (RCdTT), which is a research unit under the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR). Dedicated to researching the digital transition of tourism, RCdTT held its Inauguration Ceremony on 19 February 2024, with attendees from the industry and academia worldwide. Professor Haiyan Song – Fellow of IAST, was appointed Director of RCdTT. The Centre's primary focus is on optimizing travel experiences and achieving sustainability through the digital transformation of tourism and related businesses, with the ultimate goal of improving the lives and well-being of global citizens. Additionally, the Centre actively engages with stakeholders in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and other countries to develop research solutions and promote best practices in digitalizing the travel industry. The collaboration across various disciplines and sectors fosters innovation and generates new insights within RCdTT, contributing to the future of digitalization in the tourism and hospitality industry.
